Jeff Kowatch: Jeux de Mojo

March 4, 2025

Jeff Kowatch: Jeux de Mojo, an exhibition of oil stick on Dibond drawings, is now on view in Rosenbaum Contemporary’s Boca Raton, Fla., gallery (150 Yamato Road) through April 5. The exhibition can be viewed during regular gallery hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For more than 15 years, Kowatch practiced Zen meditation, dedicating four hours daily to cultivating inner stillness. Through a profound experience of realisation, he discovered the essence of being fully alive in the present, a principle that now informs every stroke in his work.  In Jeux de Mojo, he delves into the interplay between energy and stillness. The title is a playful twist on the French saying jeux de mot, meaning “wordplay.” “The term ‘mojo’ suggests spellcasting and mysterious energy, which resonates deeply with my creative process,” Kowatch said. “Each painting becomes a kind of incantation—an invitation to pause, reflect and experience the alchemy of color, texture and form…The title Jeux de Mojo reflects a dynamic dance between light and shadow, action and pause, mystery and revelation. My works, paired with sharp, koan-like titles, aim to provoke thought and create moments of enchantment—spaces where viewers can reconnect with their own inner stillness and vitality. With this series, I offer paintings as spells: visual spaces where energy and stillness converge, transforming perception and inviting the magic of presence.”

Kowatch’s work was the subject of a monograph published by Skira and can also be found in several public collections including the Musées royaux de Beaux-Arts de Belgique in Brussels, Belgium; the Long Beach Museum of Art and Laguna Art Museum in California; and the Union Theological Seminary in New York.
