SIMON PROCTER, "Lagerfeld at Grand Central," 2006, C-print, 47.24 x 68.5 inches, Edition of 10
Procter is part of a new wave of contemporary artists that straddle the worlds of both high art and high fashion, but his work demonstrates a blurred line between the two. These Chanel couture shows are elaborately staged theatrical productions that hinge on drama and spectacle to reach viewers emotionally and cerebrally. Procter’s images encapsulate this world. Through wide lens shots he illuminates the grandeur of scale of the architectural spaces in which shows are held in the same manner Romantic painters set their work against sublime and powerful natural backdrops. The exhibit presents six of Procter’s most stunning images. These images will also be included in the soon-to-be-released first book by the artist, Modeland, which will be published by Rosenbaum Contemporary in April.
Procter was born in Lancashire, England in 1968. He studied fine art, specializing in painting and sculpture, and holds a BA in Fine Art (Honors) from Trent University in Nottingham. His photographs have appeared in V Magazine, Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, The New York Times’s T Magazine, The Independent, and The Daily Telegraph.
